Remember back in the day when craigslist was THEE place to find pretty much anything on the internet? A job, a date, a car, a missed connection, a used tool, sports equipment, etc…
I remember looking at CL and thinking to myself, “Man… Why didn’t I think of this?”
All my naive eyes saw was missed opportunity. Someone else had already thought of it. Too late for me.
Welp, I say naive for a reason. Look at this graphic which shows the “unbundling” of most of each product category on the CL home page. Other people were looking at the same thing as me and seeing nothing but opportunity.
Within any one of the product categories on that home page lay the opportunity to niche down and build a separate and more focused website specifically for those people.
Good news is, this principle will literally never go away. There will always be unmet needs in a marketplace. A certain group of people searching and hungry for a certain thing that, at present, doesn’t exist or only has a half-ass solution for.
The trick is having the eyes to identify it and the savvy to craft a better alternative.
